Eye contact.
Eye contact.
Eye contact.
Not LOUD, not slow, not pro-nun-ci-a-tion, but
cadence — a rise and a fall, a rhythm.
Then add diction, some inflection,
tone, expression.
Please, say my name.
Please, grab my attention
(it sneaked away with
our conversation’s last thread).
When I miss something someone said
I stop.
And I miss something someone said a lot.
I notice you notice but it’s too late —
the conversation has already shifted
and we can only go forward.
I hear you say April.
I see you start, pause, make eye contact
You toss me a rope, you pass me the thread,
how you call me back.
