Dark Light

the water is just a mirage

by Magd Elzahed

my little girl, full of drive,
i am offering my hand to you,
let's take the wheel together

one last time. keep your eyes
on the road, learn to lean
into its curves for warmth.

when i am too old or no longer here
to hold you, roll down the window
and listen—

forget every noise inside you,
hold the hum of the wind’s stories
close instead.

you will find me there
at every turn—
so sing back to the wind,

savour every silent note,
swallow every seed sown,
my little girl.

you will grow—
but don’t forget to let me in
when i come to your door

offering my hand to you,
always,
my little girl.
