I’d never stared into a seal's eyes
Until that day in icu
Your slick-black gaze
the quick fire of clots on the mri
and the doctors words
He’s blind you know
I took your hand
and for an hour
stitched your fingers through mine
You saw my breath
against your cheek
my lips when they whispered
I love you dad.
You were not blind
your eyes were just trying
to unlatch their windows
So all of you could float out
over the edge of helplessness
to the ocean deep
