Dark Light

Women’s History Month

by Peter Cooke

Here I am, a man
trying to assemble a display
for Women’s History Month.
Google basically tells me
women didn’t exist before the 1850s.
And offers me snapshots
of various famous men’s wives:
sports stars, fashion icons
and the light they’re cast in
filtered through glass above.
Nevertheless, I persist!
Sifting through, deciding
Whose story to tell,
who could be worthy
of my limited space?
I include the easy ones
of course, that we already know
and try to find the ones
lost in history’s margins,
too matte
for a glossy world.
