Artist’s Statement:
I have always photographed things that catch my eye, especially the more mundane or overlooked those things might be. I am particularly drawn to details of nature & sky and the view looking up. The tree portraits are an ongoing series of close-up photographs of tree bark. I love how much history is captured in and conveyed through the outer skin, and how these images hearken to landscape and abstract painting. Scars, burls, peeling paper bark, lichen, insect & animal markings… each offers a different sense of connection, casting each tree as a unique individual and revealing age, beauty, hardship… Each bark portrait tells a story. These photographs reflect upon the environment and how it is itself full of stories of hardship and triumph that each of us experiences in our own unique ways, further connecting us across time and place.
The following images show close-up details of tree bark. These works have been shown in various venues across the United States.
