Dark Light

Threshold

by Nuzhat Nisar

When I die,
come back home
for one last task.
Near the blue Feroze pot,
is the wooden toy cupboard
with an imprint of a plain white dove,
that you used to love,
the cupboard your grandfather made
before hand tremors
devoured his artistry.
When I drew the dove
on its back, he said:
“the perfect use of the white colour pencil
in the pack.”
It was the only thing
which accompanied me,
when I left his house—
the place I forgot to return to
in my years of doubt.
When I die,
wipe off its dust
and return it—
to my father’s grave.
